WHO WE ARE

“Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) was one of the nation’s first organizations dedicated to the prevention of suicide and was a co-founding member of the National Council for Suicide Prevention. Our history and growth from an all-volunteer, small grassroots group of passionate survivors led us to what is one of today’s leading national not-for-profit organizations with staff dedicated to prevent suicide.

We are based on the foundation and belief that suicide should no longer be considered a hidden or taboo topic and that through raising awareness and educating the public, we can SAVE lives.”

In 2011, a small group of individuals partnered with SAVE to organize a community walk and bring awareness to suicide and prevention and realized it was, indeed, a Walk to Save Lives. Since then, the committee has grown and in addition to the annual community walk, holds fundraisers throughout the year to raise funds to benefit the local communities in Oswego County. To accommodate our larger mission and varied fundraising events, we’ve changed our name to Stride to Save Lives. Different name. Same great cause.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Oswego County SAVE committee is to educate the community throughout the county. It is the committee’s belief that only through education and awareness can we bring into the light the darkness that can lead to suicide. Students from the State University of New York at Oswego will be trained and go into the middle and high schools throughout Oswego County to educate staff and students on mental health and suicide.

CHAIRWOMAN’S ADDRESS

Each year more than 30,000 people die by suicide in the U.S. and over 750,000 people make an attempt.  These statistics are horrifying! Regardless of race, sex, age, where you live, suicide has no boundary and impacts every community across the country.

Ten years ago, my life was changed forever. It was a day that I know I’ll never forget and will forever be etched in my heart, as at the age of 16, my brother took his own life.  Since then it has been my personal mission to raise awareness about suicide and hopefully one day be able to help another family from having to experience what we went through.

SAVE is an amazing organization and with the funds we raise, 100% of our profits will stay locally in our own community! I’ve worked with a lot of charitable organizations and I’ve never found a nonprofit that is as transparent, dedicated and motivated to making a difference.  I am truly proud to be a part of SAVE.

On behalf of the SAVE committee, I thank you for showing interest in our organization and we hope you will join us in raising awareness and educating Oswego County, and together we can SAVE lives.
